My starter began sounding sluggish a few weeks ago so I took it in to get looked at. Apparently the starter bolts backed out and the starter was only half-engaged with the ring gear, damaging it. I'm taking it up to the guy who installed my new engine a few months ago, he's going to provide the labor for free. My question is, does anyone have the part number or know where I can find just the ring gear? When I call the dealer, they claim the ring gear is the same part as the flywheel and want $750 for the whole thing. However, a local mechanic claims that they are separate and I can buy just the ring gear for about $100.
If I can't get just the ring gear, does anyone have any suggestions on a cost-effective flywheel replacement? I'm running a Mantic ER2 clutch in the car, do I need to get a replacement from them? Or can I use any aftermarket replacement flywheel?
This is what I'm referring to if it helps. That photo was taken through the peep holes next to the starter motor, at the back of the engine.

I believe the dealership is correct and the starter ring gear cannot be separated from the flywheel. I just had the clutch done in my Z06 and looking at the flywheel I don't see any way to just replace the starter gear ring.

Wayne is correct..........you'll have to replace the ENTIRE flywheel.
