Hey guys. So I have a 97 that I retrofitted hud into. Works great, I love it. But everyone has said the hud windshield is better. How much better? I got some quotes & the hud windshield is like $1,000 compared to regular is $300 installed. Is it worth that much?
Second question, I have liability only. My insurance "contract" ends this month. Should I just wait, put full coverage on it, & have insurance foot the bill for the hud? Might be worth it then? I have USAA, they've been alright so far.
Heads up, USAA uses your comprehensive deductible for windshields. Also not sure what they'd think using a HUD windshield for a car that did not come originally with a HUD.
Either way, I've seen varying reports on HUD vs non HUD windshield. I've got a crack that has been growing on my passenger side, and I won't likely be shelling out for a HUD Z06 windshield. I personally don't think it's worth it to go for a HUD windshield. Might be worth a $100 or so extra, but not $500+.

Good point. I didn't think about that. They might consider that aftermarket & not use that. They'd probably just put the factory standard non hud glass in. Which in this case, wouldn't be worth getting full coverage as it would be cheaper to pay out of pocket.
Hmm, from my research, the HUD isn't as clear on regular windshields. Which has kinda bothered me, & I always told myself that if I had to replace the windshield, I'd upgrade. However, I didn't realize the price difference. That's insane!
I just bought an 03 Zo6 and added it to my insurance. I had heard the Zo6 and HUD windshields were expensive so I asked about glass coverage. It has the same deductible as damage or accident which I usually have at $500. Once I found this out I asked about lowering the deductible to $200 and it is only $12 more every 6 months. If I ever need a windshield that is a lot easier to accept than paying $500 and the Ins Co. paying another $500.
I don't see the issue. I don't see double. I don't see hazy. When I turn the light up FULL at night, it does get a bit hazy but that is the brightness factor.
While I'd not be interested in stickers, I might be interested if there is a surface treatment we can do to that section of the windshield which might impact it. I mean, I'd try it. Don't have the need or the concern that others are mentioning though.
I thought you couldn't get the HUD windshield anymore.
My '03 50Th Anniversary has HUD and now, after living with small cracks from rocks and the sandblasting that makes it look like the Milky Way in bright sunlight, I took a rock hit that really killed the glass.
So I just called around for quotes here in Denver, all around $1300 (Safelite, who has done my small repairs before and seems good) to others at $1500. The glass and the special liner (that's about $400 of that quote!) are available for sure. I do love my HUD and would not get standard glass but, it's going to be a hit on my wallet and my insurance rates I'm sure.
Not as bad as its $4000 magnetic computerized shocks I just replaced - of course I had them programmed out and put in standard shocks. That's crazy.
Wife's Audi Q3 2016 glass not cheap either, quoted about $480, it's got some special crap/features apparently.
The glass and the special liner (that's about $400 of that quote!) are available for sure.

What’s the special liner you’re referring to? I’m about to replace my HUD windshield, but my insurance is paying minus deductible. I want to make certain they don’t reuse anything they’re not supposed to.

I’ve spoken with two glass shops that know their stuff and say an old liner should be replaced, it’s dried up and cracked etc. Not ‘special’ except in the sense of crazy expensive. Usually a whole windshield job is that much.
