Default C5/A4 Gear cable.

It appears the General has screwed us again. I had the shifter linkage cable break and the dealership ordered a new one. I'm getting the story that they had a change sometime in the C5 and the story is now the GENUINE GM PART requires a bracket somewhere along the length of the cable. My C5 doesn't have the bracket nor was one included with the new part. Mine is a 2003 Anniversary, which was built in late 2002 or early '03. Seems that would put it in the middle or a little later in the C5 production run. I'm awaiting more information, but a new bracket must be welded in place to use the replacement cable.

Anyone know about this?

Thanks

Are you sure the cable broke? It maybe just plastic cable clips that you can get at the auto parts store. Here is the Dorman pt# 14041

Probably there's no need to replace the whole shifter cable. What usually happens is that the bushings are gone and they are the only things that need to be replaced.

All you need is the
Dorman 14057 Dorman 14057
kit. Use the white bushings (the orange ones are for Ford):

And
shows you how to do it.

If it's just the bushings, as it probably is, I wouldn't let them butcher the car soldering a bracket, etc. This is very doable and it's just a few bucks and a couple of hours to change the bushing at both ends of the cable, taking your time

Load of BS. The part number for the cable from 97-03 is 12561688

The part number for 04-05 is 10352529

We've NEVER had to do any kind of BS you're talking about and I keep at least 3 of each cable in stock since we do so many of them. You're being fed a line of crap.

What he said. Another reason to stay away from "stealerships", and follow the Forum. AND the General didn't screw up....plastic gets a little brittle after 15-20 years. Fix it yourself.

Just had mine towed in today, A4 linkage must have fallen apart. Tomorrow I'll find out.

03whiteconv did a great thread on this, including pics!!!: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...with-pics.html

another good article: https://www.corvetteforum.com/articl...-cable-breaks/

Mine broke in my carport! I have a lift at the Navy base hobby shop that I can use, I rented the drive on lift and told the guys I'd be driving the Vette there BUT could not shift so I needed to come straight on the lift. SO I head home, And render my wife's help -- with my wife in the car, foot on the brake AND the emergency brake on & wheels chocked, I got under the back of the car and pushed the shift lever to PARK position. I told her to start the car. Then I told to make sure the emergency brake was still on and she had her foot on the brake pedal. She started the car with me underneath the back and I moved the shift lever on the transmission from P-R-N-D. It moves real easy. Then I told her to let off the brake and I got in the car, she removed the chocks, E-brake off and I drove it to the auto hobby shop for the repair. Wasn't hard. I used the nylon inserts I found on E-bay.
