Just did harmonic balancer, now I have a loose, dead spot in steering. Just an inch or two, both ways, where the wheel turns with no effort, but the front wheels don' move at all. It wasn't there before the job was done, in fact, wheel was tight. If I turn the wheel a full rotation, it's still there. Opinions?

almost sounds like the steering pump isnt kicking in.....in some rack and pinion units theres a valve that controls flow......i wonder if you hit this valve and some how and its just sticking

It could be that you don't have the shaft tight enough where the steering shaft goes into that u shaped clamp. There is a torque spec for that but I found that wasn't tight enough. I had the same problem when I got done with mine I just tighten it down till there was no slop left. Worked for me.
Did you install an underdrive balancer ? If so that slows down the power steering pump to where it is turning too slow----Tuning can raise your idle speeds like 100 RPM's higher to help build steering pressure
ALSO sound like maybe your PS belt is SLIPPING check the tightness of your serpentine belt IF it feels loose or sloppy then most likely they gave you a belt that was wrong and too long

what do you suppose was happening? was it loose all together? and just waiting until the splines hit each other, before it hit engagement?
Shaft was actually loose.
Once I cranked down on that nut some more, all tightened up.
I was using published torque setting throughout, didn't think of
checking to see if shaft was actually tight, just assumed it was.

Silly me.
well at least a great resoloution. good job
let me ask a different question i think you said previously you were a math teacher... If i switch from 2.73 rear end to 3.15 rear end in my A4 04 vert, its a 15.38% increase over the 2.73
so to figure out the rpm at a given speed with the new 3.15 can i just multiply the previous 2.73 RPM x1.1538?
for example with the 2.73 .....60mph is say 1000 rpm
so with the 3.15 would the rpm be 1000x1.1538 or 1153.8 rpm?
thanks Bob ( i will admit to telling my kids once the order of operations was left to right, they just looked at me and laughed)

That is absolutely correct. Full marks for you.
...and don't sweat the PEMDAS thing, most people screw that up after they graduate HS, that's what the calculator on your phone is for.

thanks and yes i do recall them saying PEMDAS to me with a look of incredulity. I said "what I am old give me a break"
