I have had the airdam off of the front of my car now for over a year with no overheating problems..
I was on my way to BG for the labor day 2001 celebration when I hit a transport tire and it went under my car and bent the $#@# out of my air dam.. I had to remove it on the side of the road in order to continue on my way. I was a bit worried about how it would effect temps because of all that I had read about how it directs air into the rad, etc.. Well I can honestly say that my temps didnt change by even one degree with that air dam off, even in the humid 100+ temps in BG.
Even with my 436ci engine and no air dam, I still have no problems with my coolant temps.
So, in my opinion, it is not needed and if it drags and bugs you, take it off! It makes it easier to jack up your car or drive it onto ramps as well!
Well. I took mine off Saturday and drove a lot on Sunday, highway and city, 60 degrees temp. With my 178 degree stat, my temps fluctuated between 180 and 195, the changes were very rapid, oil temp stayed about 200, didn't seem to matter whether hiway or city, Even 115 mph at times...summer might be different

so are you saying you did or didn't notice a difference with the air dam off? 180-195 sounds normal for a 178t-stat.

Hmmmm.....
In MY experience, I bought a C5 once with no air dam nad there was a definite tendency to run up around 215 - 220 on the coolant temp. After I replaced it I never saw it go over 200 again.
I'm not sure how much the air damhelps with cooling. From my understanging, the LS1 cools itself pretty darn well, so a decrease in air to the radiator may not be a big deal.
The reason it's foolish to remove it is becuse it will greatly affect high speed aerodynamics in a detrimental manner at high speeds.
I haven't had any probs with my car at 170+mph and no front air dam! :D
And I sure hope you don't, but your car will be significantly less stable without it. Use care. I'm sure that being lowered helps to offset some of the aerodymics lost.
Yes, I have a very good relatioship with my old man. I need to run the idea by him. I was just curious if I needed the front air dam. Thought it may be used for cooling just wasn't sure. WOuld messing with these bolts scre up warranty or anything? How about having to jack the car up to do it? Do you need the jacking pucks to actually jack the car up?
I am maybe not aware of the definition of "bolt on".
The centerpiece is not bolt on at all, it´s plain loose, only held by a set of wires and two springs. So it moves out of the way if hit.
So you just rather hook it on.

No, it has one bolt on each end that hold it to the air dam frame.
And who cares if it is smashing the ground. It moves.
Just forget about the horrible sound it makes. Besides, it makes your neighbors happy too.
