What is the true top speed of a stock C5 hardtop, M6, non-Z06, that has been chipped? I have a guy at work who is giving me fits about the top speed. I know about the GM set 175 mph. What if there was no chip setting?

There is NO speed limiter or "chip setting" in the C5.
Speed Limiters in nearly all cases around the world, are implemented for the sole purpose of the tires speed rating on the vehcile used. The tires on the C5 exceed the C5's Top speed ability, thus there is no limiter.
The hardtop is about .31 in drag coefficient, and the coupe is about .29
They are both wind drag limited in thier top speed in fifth gear.
with 3:42 gears in 5th gear at 6200 RPM, your top speed should be in the 187 range. However that does not take into effect wind, or rolling resistance.
I can tell you from personal experience, that I had a hard time getting over 179 in my coupe, but that was before I lowered it and put N20. I also had my rev limiter raised, since I have a 02' LS6 motor in my car now.
Thanks fellas. Sorry it took me so long to thank you for your input. I've been out of the loop for a bit and haven't checked this section of the forum. This info should be sufficient to quiet the masses. As far as not having a chip limiter, I thought I saw somewhere, don't ask me where, that you could get a "piggy-back chip" to eliminate the limiter. Was that bogus information?

Would you think based on my sig numbers, I would have a shot at cracking 180? Given ideal wind and weather conditions of course.
