Default Question about spark plug heat shields.

I plan on ordering a new set of plug wires and plugs, I am ordering GM Red Hot wires. Do I still need to use the heat shields? Thanks!

Do you need to, I'd say no. If you have headers I would buy boots to help protect the wires. I ruined mine trying to get them off so didn't replace them but purchased red boots to go around the wires and even with headers no problem. Your choice though.

Run the shields if you can.

You could also buy insulating shealths.

I prefer the shields in many applications however because they tend to reflect the heat, and not hold it in the way an insulating shealth will.

Default Heat Shield

I have used both types of heat shields and I prefer the factory one's. The soft Boots can touch the manifold or other hot parts where as the factory one's hold the boots firm. I bead blasted mine and painted them with header paint. It helps to reflect some of the heat and looks great. Just my opinion.

I changed my plugs and wires out about a month ago. Bought my FRC without knowing the previous owner got ride of the OEM heat shields. Oops.

honestly though I’ve had no issues, using Red GM wires and NGK IX’s with blue fiberglass heat shields zip tied over the majority of the wire. Only about 1” of the connector base sticks out from under it. I’ll probably buy new shields eventually tho.

OEM Wires are the absolute best hands down, I've run 7's on multiple cars with OEM Wires. THE ONLY reason to ever do an aftermarket wire is if you have an exhaust manifold/header that needs a different angle boot. And then Accel ceramic's are what we would use. But OEM is my go to all the time, every time.
