Default Modified LS1 vs Modified L98 Engine

I own a C4 now with a 396 small block. Details are in my thread. I'm thinking that this may be my last year with this car and move on to a 2000+ C5 6 speed coupe. I would want to modify the motor with at least a head and cam package to start and then most likely a stroker. It seems from what I read and see the LS1 is an amazing motor with tons of potential for reliable horsepower. My question is to the guys with modified cars and is about driveablity. How do these cars react to modifications? Is it possible to get 350?, 380?, 400? RWHP and maintain smog compliance and not issues with hesitation stalling etc? I have worked very hard with my motor and have no issues like that. I'm just not familiar with how the newer motors and ECM's react to modifications.

Thanks guys,
Jason Norris

Default Re: Modified LS1 vs Modified L98 Engine (89vette)

Jason, as someone who rebuilt an 85 from scratch (with many mods) and works on C5's at Xtreme Motorsports let me tell you that the LS1/LS6 has MAJOR improvements over the L98/LT1/LT4. Regarding the LT5... who knows? GM didn't give that motor a chance IMO. Although the LS6 has already met the brute strength of the LT5 in only its second production year. 400+ rwhp on a 2000+ 6spd is obtained easily with heads/cam. How about 500+ rwhp with just an ATI Procharger (01 Z06 w/ NO other mods)? After working with Nate and staff I am a true believer of the C5 platform. 422, typically called the "427", and 436 strokers are becoming common place. Expensive? Yes... but every bit as reliable as there stock cube brothers. I cannot believe the options C5 owners have now with just 7 years of Production on the LS1/LS6 based cars. Now, if I could just win the lottery  :D
