OK, got my vette back from the dealer. They didn't even do an oil consumption test. Did the ring replacement without question. But what's up with this? Now the damn thing pulls left?!!? They shouldn't have had to pull the wheels or suspension components to get to the bottom end, should they?
Yeah, they usually remove the whole front suspension. It should be SOP to do an alignment after R&R of the front suspension assembly.
If your engine was removed, it was most likely taken out the bottom as per GM's procedure. If they did not remove it, they would have had to remove the front subframe at a minimum for clearance. After my re-ring, I didn't have any alignment issues at all, I think you should call the service manager and advise him of your situation. Good luck
I just got mine back a couple days ago from a ring job also. I had to bring it back in once already because the car squeals when it runs. They said it was a faulty belt tensioner, they replaced it, and now it’s started again but now it only does it until it warms up.
I guess this is what happens when you have them remove the engine.
I get mine back today from the re-ring job. Again, no oil consumption test. The service manager explained the problem and asked if he could re-ring the pistons. He already had the re-ring kit, new head bolts and gasket set. Said he's done several. He don't pull the motor as he made some sort of lift to get enough clearance to do the install with the motor in the car. He is a Vette man and knows what he's doing so I didn't hesitate at all. Hopefully everything turns out okay as I have to go to Norman, Oklahoma this evening for training for the Postal Service. About a 360 mile one way trip. Should be enough to tell if the job was a success.
Thr re-ring is done to reduce oil consumption. If you're burning over a quart every 2000 miles you can get it re-ringed. The dealer usually has to perform a consumption test, but from the sound of earlier posts, that isn't always being done. After the re-ring, consumption improves to about a quart every 3500-4000 miles.
It's funny though. After my first oil change @1000 miles, I didn't check
the oil level. About 500 miles after the change, I got a "Low Oil Level"
DIC message. I just assumed they never put in the 6.5 quarts.
All was well for the next couple of changes as I checked the level when
at the dealer. All of a sudden, 500 miles after the 11,000 mile change,
I was down almost a quart. Would it be possible to develop the consumption
after this many miles? I also get more soot inside my exhaust tips than
before. I suspect a re-ring is in my future. :smash: :smash:

Re: Ring job done...now WUWT? (bierbelly)
When they did the ring job on my car, they did not pull the engine out of the car but they must have had to loosen enough things on the suspension that they felt an alignment was required. They did one before I picked up the car and charged it back to the warranty work (as well it should have been).
Hey this might be a dumb question....but is their a range of vin #'s that the ring job applies to?? Is their a TSB?? Just curious if I should have this done....I did notice some soot on the edge of the polished exhaust pipes....
A lot of it is driving habits. If you use the engine as a brake as you decellerate it causes the oil to get bye the rings. It is most prevelant on MN6 cars as they do this type of driving more, but us A4 guys can do it also by driving around town in 3rd all the time. I was told 1 quart in 1,000 miles was the usage minimum. I think the test is just to see how deturmined you are and how big a problem you think it is and are you willing to go through what they say is necessary.
I did the consumption test and am going in Nov 4th.

Hope you get it all straight.

It is fairly common for this to happen with a serpentine belt system. There is so much load on the single belt that it slips a little under heavy loads (i.e. from the pwere stearing pump when turning) and when cold (untill the belt warms up becomes "stickier", like doing a burn out to make drag tires more sticky). A simple solution is to switch to a slightly shorter belt (often as little as 5 to 10 mm shorter does the trick). The concept is that the tensioner has to be twisted more with the shorter belt so more spring force is applied to the belt by the tensioner and therefore belt tension is increased.
I went in for another problem (headlight)and they were not aware of the the ring problem on the Vets. So I told them to fix it and they did. I guess I was lucky.
Mine does the same thing. They replaced the belt tensioner and now it squeals until the car is warmed up. Did you try the shorter belt? If so, did that fix it?

Boy! I'll say!
I can't get my dealer to admit obvious minor problems. I could just imagine
them volunteering a ring job.
