Coolant temp gauge maxes out on cold start up?

Coolant temp gauge maxes out on cold start up?
01' C5 . So I just finished changing all my spark plugs, go to test run it, start it up and the temp gauge goes directly to 260, so I know the engine clearly isn't hot and sounds fine, but wtf, could I have bumped something, sensor maybe, where do I look, I tried the old unplug the battery and plug it back in method but no dice. Same shut in start up.. Anyone else has this

Your engine temp sensor is the likely culprit and in full on ground mode with no resistance variance.You may get lucky and find that your connection is loose or needs freshening.
Swap the sensor and I bet you will be good.
