UGH I decided to remove the body side moldings today and what a disaster! I was very careful, took my time and got half way one side ( had to bend the bsm ) and noticed that there was something wrong under it. It looks like a line of clear coat! WTF. The car is a 98 model and I bought it pre owned. I checked the car thouroghly and it was not painted. It looks to be a factory default. My question is.... does GM back up the paint for longer then 3yr/36 mi? If not do you think a lil wet sanding/ compound will do the trick? Thanks so much in advance.

That's more likely just some of the adhesive from the back of the BSM remaining on the car. You should be able to get some adhesive remover at a local auto dealer to remove it.
I thought the same at first but i used adhesive remover on it........it looks like the bsm was put on when the paint was fresh and it left a clear coat mold??? anyone else?

You may need to go to a body shop. They should be able, I think, to "wet sand" the areas with 6000 grit sand paper and then buff out the area.
I had some fine scratches on my 00 and a buddy at a local body shop did that for me and the scratches are all but gone, need a magnifyng glass to see. I think that might work on this, you won't know until you ask.
I just re read your post, soo yeah I think it's worth the try. BUT if you aren't real skilled in that work, use a pro. Tnose scratches I mentioned above?
Guess how I got them!!

Whenever I need to wet sand something on my car I just use 2000 wet/dry sandpaper from the local auto parts place. Give it a try. I use 3m sctratch remover to buff it on and then some wax. Once you start sanding you'll be able to tell if is adhesive or not. Good luck, Kaley
