With the arrival of cold, dense air, I noticed that I'll get some minor pinging the first time I go WOT after driving normally for several minutes. The pinging is fairly sparse, and only lasts for the first one or two seconds of WOT. If I slow down and hammer it again, I can't reproduce the pinging. I can only reproduce it if I drive normally for several miles. Both oil and coolant are up to temp, but below 200 when this happens, so it's not an engine heat issue. Thi doesn't happen in hotter or more humid air, even with hotter engine temps. The car is making very good power with this air, and I believe this is probably acceptable and normal behavior, but wanted to gather others' thoughts for the heck of it.
there have been a number of threads on this, but for me the bottom line is that it is normal--I have had the symptoms off and on since I got my 98--since it doesn't happen under normal loads, I don't worry about it.
I had a 98 Z28, 2000 SS, and now a, 02 C5 all with LS1 engines. All three of them sound the same. A little piston slap when cold and some detonation at WOT.
I think there is a TSB for pinging/ignition knock, don't know if it's applicable for your particular situation
I had my 2000 PCM flashed to the newest program and virtually all pinging has been eliminated. Timing and advance curves have recently been reprogrammed by GM.
