I recently bought a C5 drop top with 7000 miles. I'm not familiar with a c5 gear box, or any corvette box for that matter, but it sure feels different from my MX-5. My shifter does not want to return to the middle of the neutral position on its own. If I move it to the far right in the neutral gate, it tends to stay there. If I nudge it, it will pop back to the middle. Just a little sticky from either direction. Is this something lube will fix or do I need to dig deeper? Thanks for your help. This is my first corvette and I have a LOT to learn.
A Mazda is going to have a smaller smoother tranny, no surprise to me. My BMW's were. Can't recall my V8 Monza from way back TBH.
As for the issue, maybe the centering spring is off? Just went out to the garage, mine definitely springs in from either gate.
Mine does the same thing. For me It's the spring that's inside of the trans that's the problem. They are hard to come by and you have to disassemble the trans to replace it. I'll just live with it for now.
If you have the OEM shifter, consider changing it out for a C6 shifter.
Probably won’t fix that issue unless something inside the box is worn (but at 7k miles, I doubt it) or one of the bolts/screws that connect the shifter to the rods is loose, but it will make the driving experience better (IMHO).
(The long straight stick is quite different if you are used to a short angled stick)
Not a difficult job, just tedious b/c of what you have to are out to get to it.
There's lots of linkage between the shifter and trans. Micro adjustments to the shifter can make a big difference. There are a couple videos on MGW's website how to access and where to adjust.
