Default Extinguishing Pull key alert without pulling key

I have a 1998 C5 Coupe. The Steering Column Lock recall has been performed.

I had a LMC5 installed as a result of repeated Pull key, wait 10 - secs alerts. It’s the correct LMC5 for my VIN according to its creator. Apparently, for my car’s birthdate, dealing with the “brown wire” is not a part of the solution for the dreaded Pull key alert returning.

I’ve had my Fuel cutoff speed adjusted with HP Tuners, so when I do get the occasional Pull key alert, I can continue without the fuel shutting off.

My question is, when I do get a Pull key alert, is there a way to extinguish the Pull key message and keep it out without pulling the key? I can cancel it by pressing the DIC Reset button, but it comes back on after a few seconds.

It is caused by the BCM being out of logical sync with the state of the column lock condition. The LMC5 and the CLB are simply devices to try and fool the BCM into thinking the column lock system is functioning normally when in actuality the lock motor is no longer operating the lock pin. Since the BCM (brains for column lock system) has no physical way to know if the column is locked or not, the engineers concocted a command response protocol between the BCM and what was originally the lock motor. The BCM would issue a command such as "LOCK" and the lock motor would extend the lock pin and then respond to the BCM "COMPLETED". The BCM upon receipt of the completed signal marks a "STATE" bit to know that the column is LOCKED. A similar set of things happen when the BCM issues an "UNLOCK" command except that when the BCM receives back the completed signal the BCM changes "STATE" bit to reflect UNLOCKED. The BCM uses the STATE bit when you go to start the car. It senses that you have inserted the key and are about to start the car. It first checks the STATE bit and expects to see LOCKED as that should be the state after you shut off the car and removed the key at the end of the last drive. If the STATE is LOCKED then the BCM functions normally and sends an UNLOCK command. If the STATE bit is UNLOCKED then the BCM is in a "confused" condition since it knows you are about to start and drive the car so the STATE should be LOCKED. To correct the "confused" condition the BCM raises the "PULL KEY......" message and wants the driver to remove the key so that it sees the removal and will then send a LOCK command to what it thinks is the lock motor. The lock motor would then extend the lock pin and send a COMPLETED to the BCM thus getting things back in logical sync.

The LMC5 or a CLB replace the signaling function of the lock motor and send COMPLETED signals back to the BCM when they receive the lock or unlock commands to keep to keep the BCM fooled into thinking the column lock system is functioning normally.

There can be timing related issues between the LMC5 and the BCM such that the BCM manages to get itself out of logical sync. On the 99 - 2004 C5's the "brown wire mod" for the LMC5 corrects this condition. But unfortunately on the 97 and 98 C5, the "brown wire mod" does nothing.

Not recommending this as a solution but some members have replaced the BCM and circumvented the problem that you are seeing. No guarantee that a replacement BCM won't still experience the timing problem. Additionally, replacement BCM's for the 97 - 98 are increasingly difficult to find............
Thank you for the thorough quick response to my post. Very helpful. I believe I can live with my current solution just fine.
