Default Used Cluster Question

If you were to buy a used cluster for a 98 where is the mileage stored is it stored in the computer or on the cluster it self what im asking if you are looking to buy a new cluster lets say the car has 45000 miles on it and you replace the cluster will the new one where does it get the mileage info, is it from the computer in the car or does it keep the mileage stored in the cluster itself?

Have been told from multipe sources , it is in the cluster , I am doing the swap myself so i will give you the final low down, then but alot of people who do the HUD swap say it is in the cluster, some say the dealer can readjust the display.

It is in the cluster, stored in a chip just above the DIC display on a board behind the gauges. If you are replacing a cluster for any reason other than hud upgrade or electronic damage, you can easily trade the circuitry between the two units. You just swap them between the two. It can be programmed, though this often runs $250-400, and many dealers will not do it. I know a guy here locally that does them for $100, but I think he's getting ready to get rid of his programmer.

How about walking me thru the circuitry change please. I would like to keep my mileage from the original dash.
