Not sure how this rusted. can it be spray painted and if so what would you recommend? When the boot slides down you can see this rusty part. (I like the stock feel and dont want to replace it.) Thanks.

Don't know if anyones tried but I'm sure it can be done. Take it all out and wire brush or sand paper it real good till all the rust is gone. Wire brush would probably be best since it looks like some of the threads are rusted too. Once its cleaned and prepped... spray away!

Before I bought a new shifter, I was thinking about trying some black shrink tubing to cover mine. They make it in a diameter that would go over the base and shrink to the minor diameter. Another option I've seen listed are to remove the shift boot base from the console and then use a zip tie or similar to snug the top of the boot to just under the ****, so that it can't slide down and expose the shifter shaft.
Or, pull the shifter out -- apparently we all need a rebuilt lower box -- then wire brush and spray with Rustoleum satin black -- but know that it will wear through again as the boot slips around.

I'd just post a wanted ad in the Classified section. I bet you can get one in nicer condition for cheap if not free. Save the time of trying to refinish this one.

Honestly I'd just use a little wire wheel on a rotary tool and then paint it with black nailpolish. Then you don't have to worry about masking and overspray.

take it off clean and sand, while it's out check lower box for wear, before taking the shifter out move it back and forth and sideways and see if you have any movement in the shaft of the lower box, take it out in neutral, when going back in good time to make sure it's aligned right !!!!
