Hello, I sold my Harley this past spring and bought a replacement in the form of a 2000 C5 Red vert. I have been doing some needed maintenance like replacing the 2011 battery, new serpentine and A/C belt, oil change and a few other items. My question is; the exhaust on this car is loud! I'm use to that from my years owning a Harley. I looked under the rear to see if I could find some part # so I can identify the system. I found no muffler, instead 2 large pipes (1 per side). I couldn't see under the mid part of the car to look for other parts so I have no idea what has been done. I assume the cats may have been replaced with a free flow muffler? Does this wring a bell with anyone? The air cleaner is stock, so if I goto a higher flow air cleaner does the computer need reprogrammed like a Harley can?
Sometime over the winter I plan to take it to a local dealer where I have purchased 2 new cars (weather permitting in Indiana) and have it put on a lift so maybe they can identify what has been changed. From the back some of the suspension looks newer or aluminum.
The cats are way up front, they may or may have not been deleted (my guess is they're still intact). Likely someone either purchased a straight thru pipe system or had one custom made to replace the mufflers (at rear).
Not something I would do (particularly on a base non modded car), but if you like loud carry on. If you can take a pic from rear below someone here might be able to identify the make.
Thanks for the reply. No I really don't like it as loud as it is, may half what it is now would be fine. I'll have to get it up on a lift to find out for sure what I have.
How loud do you want?
Do you like exotic or a deeper tone?
What's your budget?
What I have now is TOO loud for me. I don't like the drone on the highway, I can't hear the radio unless it's cranked. Now I get alot of decal popping when I let off.
From your description they sound and look like a set of Billy Boats. I had a set that I removed that had that terrible drone and were pretty much straight thru with a very small muffler in front of the axle. Just my guess. If they are I can imagine why he wants them removed. I put stock back on. Now I can have a conversation and hear the radio.

With my experience modifying Harleys, too much removal of back pressure results in loss of low end torque. I would assume a V8 is similar. When I get a chance I'll check for a small muffler before the rear end.
Does a stock system still have a nice mellow tone or would something like a FlowMaster system system give a few HP along with a nice tone vs a OEM system? This is my first Vette and is a replacement for my Harley. My Harleys had a nice tone and none were straight pipes.

Nice to hear (pun intended) you didn't have open pipes on your bike. Nothing worse on the road IMO.
The stock system is a bit too tame for my taste. A Flowmaster might be what you seek, but at the very least I'd listen to a dumpload of videos before spending your money.
Don't expect any power increase from a muffler system.

On any Harley increasing the flow at the mufflers does nothing but add noise, but put on a less restrictive air cleaner along with a power tune and there will be a increase of HP. I don't know if that holds true for a V8 or not but at my age I'm past that. My C5 runs good enough for me, I would rather have a quieter ride with the top down so I can hear the radio and reliability.
EDIT: I found a muffler shop near me that has a C5 cat back takeoff system and wants $500 installed. That sounds hight to me since he has nothing in them and he has had them plus 1 other sitting in his shop for years.
I'll do more research and I may offer him $350 installed and see what he says.

Reason: more info
If you're happy with a base system, they are frequently here in the FS section for anywhere from free to $100
Installation at a shop should be around an hour IMO
If you end up wanting it a bit louder get a bypass mod
Sounds high. Local muffler shop charged me $80 to take off and install the stock system. Already had the stock system as it came with the car as an extra exhaust when I bought it. Like grantv said they are very reasonable to buy used. I wouldn't pay probably more than $100 for a good used set as I've saw them advertised for that. Just my opinion. If they are too quiet then weld a small pipe between the pipe ahead of the muffler and the tailpipe. Keep your old exhaust and resell it. Some people will pay a lot of money for the noise.

I just turned 65 and have had my C5 for over 5 years. It came with Billy Boat Bullets and at first I thought that I couldn't take the loud noise and the drone that occurs around 1500 rpm. Coming from a V6 3000GT this was way louder than I was used to. Now, after driving her with that exhaust for this long I wouldn't trade it for anything. I've come to love the gurgle from de-acceleration and the muscle car sound when I romp down on the gas pedal . Noise is always subjective I suppose. Oh, and I had a 2004 1200 Custom Sportster with Screaming Eagle exhaust (last year before catalytic converters were mandatory) and it could rival the Billy Boats decibel wise.
I did change out my stock speakers and added a sub/amp combo so hearing the radio is not an issue.
