I know there must be a thread on this but I can't find it. 03 c5 wont crank. Just happens now and then. I would like to by pass the key reader with a permanent resister. I did this on a Cadillac Allante some years ago and it worked fine.

I had a lock Smith mesure the resistance on my original key and he says it’s a 11 so I got the key cut and the next day the car would not start with that key so I tried my old one would not work either but after a while the old one worked and I was told it has a delay if the wrong key is made but my current problem is if I go to the same shop is he not going to be able to get me the right key!
I took out out the ignition switch and cleaned up the contacts on mine and was going to replace but getting keys to match with the new ignition switch was going to be expensive. I measured my resistance and was in a range that radio shack had some for 13.00 dollars. I cut the wire for the VATS system that hang out on the outside if the ignition cylinder and soldiered the resistance into it and plugged it back in and now no more problems with VATS.

Ignition switch's have two different type of contacts, one is the ignition switch contact block that is known to cause problems due to pitted contacts, the second type of contacts are the ones that read the resistance in the key pellet which is part of the vats. If the BCM does not receive the correct current level from the key pellet the BCM will not provide a ground to the TDR relay, and its contacts will not send power to the switch terminal on the starter solenoid, so yes a vats problem will prevent the car from cranking.
