Whining Axle Noise
Problem#2.....grrrrrrrrr!
I was going on a trip to Boise from Portland and decided to "top off" my fuel before leaving. I can usually make that trip with one tank of gas. About 25 miles into my drive I noticed the "Check Gauges" indicator was on and looked at the fuel gauge...it read EMPTY!! Once I stopped at a rest area shut off and restarted the car, the gauge went back to it's proper setting. Shortly thereafter....plunk....EMPTY AGAIN!!
Now I called the Chevy dealer and they said that GM acknowledged that there is a problem that existed and a tech bulletin was released about it. But in no case has there been a recall!!! 1997 thru 1999 were built with questionable sending units that are subject to failure at around 35-36K miles!! Interesting....just as the warranty expires, so does the sending unit! Well I was also informed that since I was over 36K miles and past 3 years it would not be a warranty service repair...roughly $375 for the part and $180 labor for installation!!
When I'm driving around the city and fill the tank I don't seem to have the problem. Any clues if it might be something else going wrong!? Anyone had this problem and if so, did you get GM to fix it as a defect?
Here's wavin at ya!

Search the forum for 'bearing failure' and click on the first link.
There's several good discussions within this thread. If you deduce that it is
a bad bearing, go to my new site: http://www.c5corvette-diy.com and I've got
a bearing replacement procedure that you can use, complete w/ tool list, etc.
