Default Frustrated (Updated 9/30)

Updated Post:

Finally got the dang thing in! What a PITA to get that sucker in there. Took off from work 4 hours early so I could finish the job.

Thanks all for your advice and input. I took a little from all your post. Loosening the sub-fram bolts did help.

Pulley now has zero wobble

Orginal Post:
I bought the ASP Under-drive Pulley from Extreme. My original has a wobble to it so I decide to go with the under-drive seeing as I’d have to install a new one anyway. Fun part was when I went to install it. Everything was going fine till I tried to slide the rack out. Not enough clearance to get it out. I tried every which way, but no go.

I’ve decided I’m going to button her back up and let the pros do this one. Already contacted Extreme to see what they can do for me.

I was also wondering since I have an extended warranty on my car if the crankshaft balancer would be covered under that.

Thanks for letting me vent. No ones fault but my own. O’well, live and learn.

Later, Keith in AZ :flag

You need to loosen the 4 bolts that hold up the subframe and use a pry bar on the front driver side of the subframe (between the subframe and the chassis) about 1/2" or so. This will give you enough clearance to slide the rack out of the passenger side. It is PITA, but it does work.. Good Luck!!

Thanks for the post. My other concern deals with securing the pulley itself. Can I just leave the car in gear and take the bolt off. Or do I have to pull the starter and place a flywheel lock like the service manual says to do?

Thanks again for your response.

YOu don't need to remove the starter. Since your car is a m6, just put the car in gear, set the ebrake, and hit the bolt w/ an impact gun. If you don't have an impact gun get a breaker bar and a piece of pipe to slide over it for more leverage

I just did this with a buddy this weekend and we did NOT have to loosen the sub-frame/crossmember. We just rotated the steering rack a couple of different directions until we cleared everything and it slid right out on the driver's side.

To install the pulley, I had the car in 6th (MN6) and used the original bolt to install the new one. I also followed the manual to angle torque it 140 degrees. No problem. You can see the marks I made on the pulley in the pics below.

You're so close - don't quit now.
