Default C5Z Fuel System

Hi,

I’m in the market for a C5Z. I found a 2003 that I like but I believe it was built 2/03 so it should have the new fuel system. I’ve been searching this topic quite a bit and it seems there are no reports of the 2003 models having the crossover tube issue. Is that still correct?

Would I simply be better off finding a 2002 with the old style rubber hose connecting the tanks instead?

Many thanks

either should be fine. the stock setup with a boost-a-pump & 60# injectors was recently proven to reliably make 700hp.

honestly, i don't recall seeing that being a problem, but it's been a while since i looked that specific issue up. and PLEASE disregard the first line of this post.

My guess is that buying a nicely kept ‘04 C5Z that never had the tanks replaced (owner reports no isssues, he’s had the car a while) would be a fairly big risk? Or is it deemed they won’t fail is a certain number of years passes, in this case 15 years?

I have a 2003.5 and you're correct, they have the tank issues of 2004s. Honestly I don't think the 2004 tank issue is a huge one.... you simply don't see a ton of discussion on it, so that tells me that the problem ones were probably ID'd a long time ago and fixed. When I was doing my research buying, I didn't even come across the 2004 tank thing.

As far as earlier vs later fuel system... the biggest disadvantage of the newer system is you have to drop the tank(s) to get to the fuel pump if you ever wanted to upgrade or needed to replace it down the road.

Default fuel Tak leaks

The defective fuel tank issue was subject to a 10 year recall that ended in 2014. So it seems like most would have been fixed by now. I am sure there have been some that have failed after the recall ended, but has there been a rash of reported failures since then or more recently? GMs internal data showed that all of the reported failures as of 2010 were on cars with less than 23k miles. Is there better info now. Hopefully a car that has this issue would have been weeded out by now. So how big of a problem is this really. I do own a C5 within the suspect Vin numbers. should I be saving up for a fuel tank?
