Default Rear end gear questions.

I'm new to all of this so pardon a few basic questions. What rear end gears does a 2002 mn6 coupe have? If I wanted to increase overall performance and sacrifice a little top end what would be your suggestion? Does changing gears require any other mods to the drivetrain? Lastly does swapping gears void the warranty? Thanks in advance.

A MN6 is the perfect car to swap rear gears. I would put in the 4.10's to replace the standard 3.42's. The 6th gear is so high now that it is almost usless. It is even questionable if you lose any top end. You will lose some mileage - but then that is always the cost of speed. The swap is DIY possible (Mike Mercury web site) or a dealer could do it for $400-$500 range. A&A, COH, WCC, and others have them available.

I am a gear lover. I think it is the most subtle way to make one mod and change the "quickness" of the car which is almost undetectable to others unless they are besides you falling back into the rear view mirror.

Warranty: Only the actual gears themselves and the rest of the parts from the gears to the tires will by under suspect for warranty. But even then, it is not so easy to tell one diff from the other without specifically looking for it.

Your car has the GM/ Getrag 3.42 ratio rear end gearing. GM/Getrag ALSO makes a 3.73 rear end gear as well and is an easy swap. In fact there should be no warranty issues. The downside is that the 3.73 gearing is about $2400 for the complet unit . By comparison this is an costly option, but will make a difference in the perfomance of the vehicle. If you decide to go with either the 3.90 or 4.10 gearing these are generally rebuilt units using the 3.42 core and new ring and pinion gears . You also will have to have the PCM programmed to calibrate the speedometer and any other functions relavent to the change in rear end ratio. Not a big deal.

If your looking for more performance fron your car thgis is a generally well acceptyed modification and should give you the results your looking for..:D

I dont think it is necessary to reprogram the computer when changing gears in a MN6, am I wrong

Found this in an old post

[QUOE]The reluctor pickup wheel (where the VSS gets its speedometer pulses) has the same amount of notches, no matter if you have the 2.73, 3.15, 3,42, 3.72, 3.90.... carrier on the C5.[/QUOTE]

I am not aware of any reason to get an MN6 reporgrammed for gear changes.

I INSTALLED A 390 HD ON MY COUPE, IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REPROGRAM FOR THE GEAR CHANGE. I CONSIDERED THE 410 BUT WAS TOLD THE GEARS ARE LARGER AND THE TEETH SMALLER TO FIT THE HOUSING AND THE 390 WAS STRONGER. I FELT THE 373 WAS TO EXPENSIVE FOR THE LITTLE DIFFERENCE IN THE 342. 6TH GEAR IS SO USELESS I FEEL LIKE I PROBABLY HAVE MORE TOP END. I LOVE THE 390 SETUP FOR STREET OR STRIP USE AND IT WORKS QUITE WELL WITH MY HC PACKAGE AND THE PROCHARGER AND OTHER MODS I'VE INSTALLED. I HIGHLY RECOMEND A GEAR CHANGE.

absolutely correct. :yesnod:

The vehicle speed sensor reluctor ring is incorporated into the outside area of the ring gear. The vehicle speed sensor detects the rotational pulses produced by the reluctor ring and send the signal to the vehicle control module (VCM).

The reluctor ring is always 41 notches; regardless of the axle ratio. The only thing that would throw off the speedo on a 6 speed manual would be different rear tire diameters.
