Default Sounds like rock hitting winshield

Have a strange one here. Driving at freeway/interstate speeds, there has been a sound inside the cabin that is identical to a rock hitting the windshield. This occurs with either the lexan or solid targa in place as well as cold, cool, warm or hot outside temps. Actually fairly loud, startles you when it happens. The noise also occurs randomly.
Any ideas on this one?

It literally sounds like the windshield. There are many times when there is absolutely no other vehicle near us to throw a rock. But sure sounds like it. Most of the time, fairly loud, will make the redhead half jump out of the seat.

I have this same thing happen on all my cars for many, many years (Mustang Cobra, Range Rover, Corvette, etc.). It sounds like a rock hitting the windshield or like glass cracking. I've attributed it to thermal expansion/contraction of the windshield area from the car warming up or cooling down in relation to the temperature outside - just my theory based on observation.

Also here's a Google search on this phenomenon and some likely causes you can look into:

Yep, this is the way to bet. I have a C4 with the lexan targa and it sounds like a pop corn machine if it is cold outside and the interior is heating up. Once at temp, it is all quiet.

Purchased the '04 in 11/13 with 11,700 on the clock. Car now has 25,000. This noise situation started about 2-2.5 years ago. Doesn't matter which targa top in place, no pattern to when it occurs, sometimes happening the entire drive.
