Default Cats Compatibility

Does anyone know if the cats are the same between the LS1 and Z06? Were there any changes to the system over the years, like if i tried to put a '97 midpipe on my 2003 Z06, would it fit?

Anthony,
change those injectors yet ??....as far as the cats I'd go to a GM dealer and inquire.

There are differences between the 01 and 02 midpipes for sure. The first year Z had 4 cats, the latter years only 2. With that said, I've read that they are interchangeable as far as shape and size goes.

Why you'd wanna put the older 4 cat system on a later Z is beyond me though

Are the cats specific to the LS6 or do they use the same as the LS1 from 2002-2004? I'll call the dealer and see what they say, but i'm fairly certain it's going to be over $1000 from them.

Just called the dealer, they said a new one would cost $3,066. So i will be looking for a used one.

Are you looking to pass smog, or just want to return to closer to stock? Corvette Central has a stock replacement brand new for $730+shipping, but it may not pass a rigorous CA smog check.
Another option is, of course, to post a wanted ad in the parts for sale section. Someone probably has exactly what you want taking up room on a rafter.

Yes that is the intention, to post a wanted ad in the parts section. I just want to do a little research first and find out if i can spread out my search criteria a bit so i have an easier time finding one. I'm asking because my cats are most likely bad and i will need to replace them. I'm just interested in if the midpipe and cats are exactly the same from 2002-2004 LS6 and or LS1 Vettes.

GM introduced the pup cats in 2000 to please Commifornia while developing a proper setup for 2002. So the 2002+ cats are different from the previous years. I do believe they're the same across all 02-04 models though.

I'd never pay the dealer for a stock exhaust system, that's just nutty. Why even consider it?

Excellent, thank you. That will make finding a replacement much easier.

The secret to really cheap if somewhat inconvenient shipping for larger (but reasonably light) items: Greyhound.

You can probably get pipes from OR to NJ for like $60. I'm guessing a bit.

True, but there is no Greyhound any place close to me... Hence an 80mi drive to get there

I have 0420 and 0430 (Cats) check engine light codes. The car won’t pass NJ inspection with a check engine light on.

The OP as he had said previously has P0420/0430 DTC’s which are CAT “efficiency codes” !!

How many miles are on the car? You may want to have someone run a diagnostic on your car to make sure you don't have something that caused the cats to fail. I had a cat fail but the car had 250k miles at the time.

OK Guys...Anthony had started another thread over a week ago with his concerns of a P0172/0175 which are "rich codes"...he also had the P0420/0430 cat efficiency codes...I said you must address the rich codes before you decide to R&R the cats if bad or your new cats will eventually fail again....he brought the car to me this past weekend and after some diagnostics I had determined that 4 injectors failed the "injector balance test"...4 injectors were "flowing" more fuel than the others. The injectors were changed yesterday and am waiting for the repair confirmation. Once the fuel trims are again normal the 0420/0430 DTC's will be addressed...these are NOT "rare" codes...usually if these rich conditions are not addressed promptly the cat will fail and these efficiency codes will occur...the cats can no longer store oxygen !!... To diagnose this the upstream and downstream O2 sensors are observed and if the downstreams waveforms mimic the upstreams at higher RPM this may indicate a bad cat...a good cat will show the downstream O2's to read around a fairly STEADY 700-800 mV or so and not "switch" like the upstreams...an exhaust leak anywhere aft of the forward O2 sensor to before the rear O2 can cause also cause the downstream O2 sensor to "switch"...if no leaks are seen I will do an "oxygen storage test" by introducing propane into the engine and once both sensors signal a rich condition the propane is shut off...the longer it takes the downstream O2 sensor to go lean than the upstream indicates that the cat can store this excess oxygen...an oscilloscope is used instead of a scan tool because the scope shows "voltage over time" and the scan tool shows "voltage over frame"....scope is more accurate !!
