Unless your a computer, you can't outshift a automatic. :D
Can I outshift my auto if it is not computer controlled? If I can, then why can't I outshift my auto even if it is computer controlled? And just to add fuel to the fire, they why is the Z06 a manual?

Wrong answer, computers can be badly programmed :D :D
And i know what i'm talking about here
so :
1) under WOT, shifts are quite fast, the loss there is negligable compared to the following points
2) as stated in an earlier reponse, what is killing A4 are the ratios, as most people don't have 3.15 but 2.73 ==> this is VERY long.
3) you only have 4 speeds instead of 6, and the RPM drop between each gear is huge, falling around 3000 rpm in 2nd gear and 3500 in 3rd
The longer the racetrack, the bigger the difference.
For roadracing the MN6 guy will always be in the right RPMs, not the A4 guy.
I like my vette, but the next one is going to be a MN6 for sure ;)
Sometimes I stick my foot in my mouth by arguing something that I don't have all the facts, but in this case I'm very sure of my facts. The M6 is faster than an A4. Yes, you must have a competent driver. But with a competent driver, the M6 will be faster in 0 - 60 and quarter mile. I've read many, many articles in magazines, I've raced serveral automatics, and GM's own performance tests bear this out. Go to Chevrolet's web site, Corvette, specifications. They show 4.6 (0 - 60) for the M6 and 4.9 for the automatic.
If ya'll want to argue consistency, or who can do it while eating a donut, fine. I won't be eating a donut in my Corvette.

:boxing :seeya As I go bye ya in my 6 speed! :seeya :boxing
My 2 cents... I've had several sticks and several autos. SOTP--sticks have always felt faster. And you can't beat the driver involvement aspect... Who doesn't love ripping through the gears on a strait way, or playing in the twisties?
All I am going to say is there is a reason why all of the professional racers user automatic transmissions. There is no question that with a professional driver a stock M6 is capable of being faster than an A4. However, if you get a TC and a 3.42 (w/ transgo kit) in the auto, you will beat a simalarly equipped 6M 90% of the time.
By the way, I agree that the M6 is more fun at times. The SOTP sensors aren't that accurate when you are jerking back and forth on every shift. . .of course it feels faster! :smash:

That's right, we do....because we're real men! Just a joke....hope no one gets too upset. :)
I guess then we should re-phrase the question to read: Who would win from a standing start while sipping a mocha coolata from Dunkin Donuts? That's right, an A4 my friend. Unless you manual guys and gals have someone feeding you from the passenger seat!
Real men? booo!!  look at the picture of my Jeep below. Now that's a MAN's vehicle :yesnod: :yesnod: .
j/k too! I like my A4 because I like the luxury/ease of driving, and it's drag potential but the MN6 is fun I'm sure! I'm not good with a stick yet as all my car's have been auto but I say to each his own. My C5 isn't my daily but I still like to have a free hand when driving and not have to worry about shifting, no matter how fun it can be at times.
Hey Guys, I didn't mean to start a big fight over this, I was just looking for info. I have been looking for where I found my info, but haven't found it yet. When I do, I will post the web address. Thanks for all the feedback, but lets all act like the real men we are, and not the little kids with the big toys we have.
I have to agree with the GM specs having the 6 speed faster than the A4. :yesnod: However once Torque Management is Removed and a Torque Convertor is installed thats a Whole Different Story. :D
The current Motor Trend has road test results in the back. It shows the M6 being .1 of a second quicker to 60 and about .5 quicker in the quarter. These are with their professional test drivers. Out on the street with the average banker vs the average engineer, the A4 wins 75% of the time. It's very hard to launch a car and hit every shift with perfection with the addrenalin flowing and the heart pumping!
