posting for a buddy of mine who has an 03 Anniversary edition (automatic) with around 25K miles on it - the other day as we were leaving a car show it started revving up suddenly and he had to stay hard on the brakes - shut it off and started it up and was fine for a while until another stop light and it did it again. I'm guessing something electronic in the accelerator of throttle bodies perhaps? Told him I would post here and see if anyone else had a simialr problem and what the solution was and if anyone had a reasonable cost guestimate. Also would it be something that a not so mechanically inclined person might be able to do? Appreciate any suggestions and trouble shooting.
I will give this a shot, but you'd be better off posting this in tech.
I would start by thoroughly cleaning the throttle body and checking for any obstruction that might be causing it to stick open.
I believe these throttles have a "fail safe" that closes them if they lose the "signal," so the problem might also be that something ( electronic accelerator) is telling it to go wide open.
Check the codes on the DIC first. If there's nothing, my next move would be to clean the throttle body and replace the accelerator assembly.
Before any of that, though, check and make sure the floor mat (or anything else) isn't binding up in the pedal.
