Just got a call from costal Cadillac and Chevrolet in pawleys island south carolina. Had our 04 towed in this am. Shift cable broke. They told me the cost to repair the shift cable would be $763? That sounds high.

I'll second that - it does sound high...

UPDATE: just got called from coastal chevy in pawleys island sc that they broke two bolts on the exhaust so that may cost an additional $200. Now we r up to $963 + for the shift cable repair? What's next.

They just added insult to injury...
I know it's probably too late, but usually the cable is fine and is just a broken bushing at one of its ends.
Even though most probably only 1 gave up, this is a call to replace bushings at both ends.
I'm sort of frustrated by your story. Had a similar story a few years ago...happened on the road, needed a tow to a trans. shop who did the tow, new cable and both bushing ends and charged $249. (I think).

Reason: add
Here are some pics of c5 shift cable that I had replaced. Final cost $800 OW.
PIC 1 CABLE UNBROKEN
PIC 2 CABLE BROKEN
PIC 3 CLOSE UP OF WHERE IT BRAKES
PIC 4 CLOSE UP OF NEW BUSHING
Probably should have called transmission repair facilities to get a number of quotes before taking it to chevy dealership. Expensive lesson for a part that costs between 50 and 90 dollars from advance. Auto zone, napa or rock auto. I had limited time to have it repaired so I paid the price. Call around it's worth if your not broke down on the road or other circumstance that you need the car.

I actually watched a video of a c6 getting that cable replaced. It broke in the same spot. It was a good deal of work to get at it. Drop the exhaust, the tunnel plate, trying to get hands up under the car to get to that cable bracket......So it is a PITA job and does take a bit of time.....Still a bit much at 800 bucks....Did they explain why exhaust bolts cost so much? The exhaust has to come down as part of the job so what is does the extra 200 cover???
They broke the bolts taking down exhaust. Said they had to drill out and tap bolt holes. Probably broke them with and air tool.
I have been working on cars since 1960. Was not at my garage in FL where I could have made the repairs.
Frozen or rusted bolts are easy to remove without breaking them. Wire brush both ends of bolt if there are exposed. Use an induction system if you cant use a torch or if you can use a torch put a heat shield around bolt, heat the bolt and once heated spray with a really good penetrating fluid. Use a box wrench and cautiously move the bolt back and forth using more penetrate as you go.
There are probably a number of ways to remove rusted bolts. How rusted could the bolts be on my 04 that has never been driven in rain or snow. Has always been garaged since new and has 23,000 miles on it?

Yeah, I have not had much luck with some of these guys that work as dealer mechanics. Some are great, but some are not. Sucks
