Default Wheel Balancing Weight Location?

I just had a set of Nitto NT01's mounted on a set of 18" x 10.5" Speedlines at the local tire shop. When I dropped them off, I asked if it was possible to tape the weights as INBOARD as possible due to the fact I have C6 Z06 brakes on my C5 and clearance near the inside face of the wheels is almost nil...

When I picked them up, damned if the weights weren't taped on flush up against the inner face of the hub one wheel, and maybe about an inch back from there on the other!

I haven't checked to see if they'll clear the calipers yet, but it got me thinking:
- Either the Tech doesn't have a choice in where they go, the machine says "here" and that's where they put them,
- Or they confused "Inboard" with "as far outboard as possible inside the wheel".

When balancing a set of wheels and tires how much leeway is there in the location where the weights can be taped?

Any info greatly appreciated!

Jeff

They can select, on most balancers, where they are going to put the weight.
The machine when doing one set of weights (versus inner and outer lip) defaults to the middle of the wheel.

If it was an inexperienced Tech he won't adjust the settings. There is also the possibility that the guy at the counter didn't relay the message properly and the tech didn't know the intent. I'm betting this is what happened.

Can I just buy some tape on weights and "move" them along the same point where the current ones are far enough inboard to avoid the calipers?

Thanks again!

in theory you could. But I've seen variance with my shops road force machine(when i ran a goodyear) based on where the machine would "like to see" the weights.
it wasn't always consistent either.

Who did you balance?
Personally I'd take them back and have them correct it or you will feel it. if they don't clear, which betting they won't based on how tight the C6Z brakes are on a C5
