So I have a 2002 and am having issue figuring out what the issue is. I like to manually short gears in my automatic, it is just funner
Well it shifts fine up but it will not down shift, also if you take off in first and run up to say 4k rpm in first and rather than shift just let off on gas to slow and it will drop rpm to an idle and feels like it's in neutral. I have put it on computer and it's not showing any codes and I also changed speed sensor on rear did and changed today
First thing to do is to get it up on jack stands level. Fire it up in park and warm it up to about 150 degrees. Pull out the fill plug and see if any trans oil starts to overflow out. If it dont then you are low on oil. Fill it up until it starts to dribble out. Plug back in and go for a test drive. Once you know that your trans is full, you can decide on what to do with the problem.
Yes, check the fluid level. Do not shut the engine off without the fill plug in place. If you do, fluid will pour out the open plug hole, resulting in low fluid level. In addition, the A4 will not upshift or downshift when in first or second.
I had this happen on a Camaro I used to own that also had the 4L60E. The diagnosis from the shop at that time was a blown planetary gear. I am no transmission guru so I might be wrong but the symptoms were identical. Car would shift up no problem. Would not downshift. Would not "hold" the gear it was in if I came off the throttle and had the shift selector in that specific gear.
Short and sweet.....I see a rebuild in your future!
