Default HUD Sticks at Initialization

Another wonderful HUD issue... 2003 Anniv. vert.

At Key on, HUD lights up full bright, ALL images display & gets about 1/2 way through the tach sweep & stops dead. Dimmer, and page have not effect. I've had both the IP & HUD out, apart, check the switch (page was not working but is NOW after some cleaning). With dim slider full down, HUD never comes up at all after IPC initialization, slider has no effect . I've followed the service manual (lame for the most part on testing HUD)... After checking for open/shorts it just wants you to try replacing switch, HUD & IPC till it works.

If I unplug the HUD from IP, power up & then plug back in I do get just the basic page to light up, but again, page has no effect & HUD doesn't really respond/update.

This is NOT the mirror issue. That function DOES work properly at ALL times... I'm afraid we are going to have to try a used HUD &/or switch....

Just looking to see if anyone has had a failure like this. My concern is that it "might" be the IPC itself & not the HUD.

TIA! For any feedback.

Martin

Just a quick update. Took HUD & IP apart again & re-soldered a LOT of places on the boards. Including the surface mount processors. I have a really fine tip on my soldering station and a big lighted magnifying glass. I also took apart the switch assembly (you must drill out melted pins holding it together). Cleaned contacts. I also took apart the cable ends & tightened up the pins.

The unit is now beginning to work. It's not stable, sometimes doesn't come up. sometimes works just great & sometimes still sticks at the key on gauge sweep & everything stays lit up.... Back together & with customer. Will see how it goes with some usage.

Trog,

Be cautious when soldering semiconductors, make sure your well grounded.

Questions,

-does the IP always operate 100% , regarding whether or not he HUD is plugged into the IP ??

-any issues with the IP ? please be specific.

-did your check the switches for the HUD options with an Ohm meter for Continuity and contract resistance ?? contact resistance should few under 3 or 4 ohms. Your should "wiggle" the wire connections when testing each switch wire

-do any of the HUD option switches actual operate property ?

Any switch operate, 100% of the time or intermittently ??

Because your posts reads that the operation of the HUD is intermittent, you might have an intermittent wire in the cable from the HUD to the IP.

SO let me know your answers and if you wish I'll help you test the cable etc..If you would work on this on the phone sent me a IM

Michael.

Michael,

IP is 100% at all times, no issues I can see.

Took HUD switch completely apart & cleaned the mode button which was only one showing intermittent continuity. Worked fine after.

When HUD is up & working, all HUD switches work fine. up/down ALWAYS works. Brightness & Mode are intermittent when HUD is being wonky.

I took Both cables (IP to HUD & Switch to IP) off, checked continuity (all good), used a pick & removed each wire on the ends & tightened up the plug portion used DeOxit spray on plugs & pins.

Wiggled all wires at ends when it was both working & wonky with no change.

Anyway, this is ALL MOOT at this point. Client traded in his car on Friday. He still has his supercharged '97, used his '03 as a trade in on a replacement commuter car (prius) after being sideswiped (almost head on) by an idiot on the highway last week. So, don't expect I'll ever see it again (fingers crossed), I only charged him like 2 hours labor for the 2 days of screwing around with it...

TROG,

Well at least it's of of your Shop. re-soldering SMD parts is a lack of production quality, either control or selection of components. And it's 100% preventable.

As a retied Electronic engineer employed in electronic manufacturing and design companies,, I'm pretty "frustrated with the overuse of MPUs (microprocessor units) in ALL makes and models of the auto industry. As example, Automated soldering of SMD (surface mount devices) is a very mature process and there's no good reason for cold solder joints that new cars have been experiencing for several decades. Imaging out TV's, Computer, Phones etc had these sorts of issues.

The electronics in Autos is out of control, and even skilled specialty shops dread working out the issues in the electronics. Wait, just wait until the issue Pop and Bang Around in self driving Cars. From my point of view, auto makes are a decade away if they started today for 100% just for electronic reliability.
