wife's 2004 automatic c5 vert has been making a ''shuddering'' noise from differential since dealer delivered it [used] six years ago . we had chevy dealer change fluid a couple years ago and it no longer makes noise in turns but there is no change in noise when backing up and that noise is bad beyond believe , you can also feel it when backing . i did a search and most common suggestion was to put ''amsoil severe gear 75w90'' in it . i'm 80 years old and don't want to throw money away on something that will make no difference . your thoughts GREATLY APPRECIATED . wife also has a 2000 coupe with 40,000 miles which had royal purple fluids put in just before we bought it 13 years ago and diff has zero [apparent] problems . by the way , the 2004 has 30,835 miles on it and we have driven it about 2,000 miles in six years . thanks for your helpful comments . . . peace...ps: one amsoil suggestion also said to add a ''sliplock additive'' which i thought was not an amsoil requirement . is it ??
Probably the solution is a fluid change along with the friction modifier. Any of the full synthetic fluids and same brand friction modifier should do the trick.
Keep in mind that it takes some time for the new fluid and friction modifier to make its way into the differential clutch packs. Some advise spending time in a vacant parking lot and turning a few figure eight maneuvers after the fluid change.
