Default Need thermostat help!

I bought a Motorad 180 degree thermostat from SLP about a month ago. I decided to go ahead and test it today before installing it, since there have been some posts about getting stats that didn't open at the right temp.

Mine starts opening at about, well it actually starts cracking open at about 187 but not enough to flow much. At about 192 it is open far enough to start flowing well. It is not open fully till it gets to 194. But as the water cools it remains fully open to about 186 and doesn't fully close till 180. Is this typical for a 180 degree thermostat?? Or should it open far enough at 180 degrees to really start flowing some water?

This is the first time I have checked a thermostats operation in water so I'm not sure if this is normal -- though I would think not. Help!! I don't want to go through the trouble of installing it only to find out that it didn't change anything. ( I know about the fans aspect -- I already have a Hypertech. ) Thanks

General rule of stats is: Fully open 13degrees above setpoint, fully closed at setpoint. My 160 stat makes the car run about 172-4 all the time.
