Default why won't 4.10 gears work?

I found a set of 4.10's for the 8.25" Getrag unit. I keep reading on here that they won't "fit". Why would a company even make the gears if they don't fit? Or DO they fit?
Thanx in advance!

If the 8.25 Getrag unit is the C5 rear end used for 3.42 gears (I know the C5 rear end is made by Getrag, but I don't know the size), the 4.10's will fit and work. There are several forum members who are running 4.10's. I think if your rear end had either 2.73 or 3.15 gears in it, you may need a different carrier to fit the 4.10's into.....

Try searching the archives for '4.10' or 'gears' and you will likely find all the answers to all your questions....

thanks for the info. That clears some things up. Guess I just need to find out which carrier they will fit. The C5 diff is 8.25" btw.
Also I have another question..
Are ALL C5 differential assemblies the same from 97-03. I have access to a core that I can build up with the 4.10's. and would like to just swap the whole thing in.
How much do places normally charge for a differential unit with 4.10 already installed?
I've already done some searching, but it looks liek I need to do more.

Thanks!!!

No, not all C5 carriers are the same. There are two different ones. I know the one used for 2.73 gears will not work with the 4.10's. You need the carrier that is used for the 3.42 gears for 4.10's. I'm not sure which carrier is used for the 3.15 gears.

I was asking about the differential casing itself, not the carrier.
Will a 97 casing work in a 2002, or vise-versa?
Does anyone know if 4.10's can be used on a 3.15 carrier?

You need the carrier that is used for the 3.15 & 3.42 gears for 4.10's. Same case for the 3.15 and 3.42.

cool thanks :)
Now does anybody know the answer to my other question regarding whether or not all C5's have the same diff. casing?

TIA
:)

the 2.73's are the unique case. This carrier will not accept any gearing upgrades.

I can not vouch for the 2002 or 2003 but I'm sure they are the same. In any case we changed a 2001 to an earlier year, not sure which, but everything fit and bolted up the same.

Actually it's not the outer case that will not hold the 4.10's .You need the 3.** series posi unit for the 4.10 upgrade. That's why all the cores need to be 3.15 or 3.42's.We have a set of 4.10's from a vendor that the 3 series case was dropped and cracked and they took all the guts out and just put it in the 2.73 case. This is what I was told by the vendor so don't kill me if the info is not correct.
