The air filter in my 2002 is the oval shaped one, they cost around $300.00 on ebay to replace, the rectangle ones cost about $50.00,I assume
my car is the base model, would it have come with the more expensive filter?, is it possible for me to adapt the $50.00 one?.
Is it possible the oval one is reusable, can it be cleaned?. Thanks

Reason: Had the wrong price listed.
Do you have pictures of it? Sounds like its an aftermarket filter. I believe S&B and K&N both make similar style filters that can fit the stock air duct if that is what you have

That's aftermarket, maybe K&N hard to tell. You can clean that one, look for instructions on K&N site (assuming that's what it is). To install original stock filter you will need the factory air box.

Just to assure myself that this filter is reusable (washable) would the material used for the filter media be more of a hard plastic or metal
construction, rather then the "paper" type material?, is it essential to use coat of oil after cleaning?. Thanks

"Name Brand" filter will have their name on it, remove it and take a look. K&N claims their's is good for 50K miles, if you clean it properly. Some filters are oiled some are not, need instructions from mfg. This is for a C-6 but similar
IF you do have a K&N filter on the car, the filter will have an embossed logo on it (per the pic). Most auto parts stores will carry the K&N Filter cleaning kit and there will be instructions for the cleaning process and re-oiling. It's real easy to clean the K&N filters but be careful when re-oiling! The oil will be in a spray can so just use a very light coat. Too much oil and it will get sucked up into the intake and cause running issues.
IMHO, having a stock filter may be a better deal in terms of the work involved and the overall price. If you simply replace a stock filter once a year, it would be cheaper than buying a K&N style filter and the cleaning kit.

I agree, I wish it did have the stock filter, I believe in preventative maintenance, stock filter would have been more convenient. Thanks
