Default hatchback being a pain in the butt

Hello! I have a quick question that might have been answered in here before, but I've had no luck in finding a solution. I have a 2004 coupe that I've had for a couple of months. Just out of nowhere my hatch has decided to stop working.. I can push down on it so it can't go any further and it just won't stay down. So I opened the hatch and the latching part that holds the loop things on the hatch down to the car is free moving. I got a screwdriver and flipped it over and believe it is supposed to stay down until I click the trunk open button. I at first thought it could be the lock actuator as a whole..but just seems odd they both stopped working at the same time. Currently, the hatch is being held down by ropes I've tied from the inside. Any help would be amazing.

IM guessing that it is broke... LOL ...what is actually broken would require some investigative surgery. it could be a simple clip, or a broken internal component which might be fixed by someone with good mechanical skills. the latch itself has several components, the solenoid is another component. testing the solenoid would be easily tested.. leaving the latch as the problem. there is a latch spring and paw. You need to diag the source of the problem beyond the fact that the latch does not work. there is no commonality to your issue ( no common problem than others have already researched... Atleast not that I have seen while at GM or the almost 20 years here.
Good luck
Bill

No solenoids. Each latch mechanism has an electric motor that turns a threaded shaft pulling a latch release. They do die -- how I know what's inside -- but for both to go at once seems kind of unlikely. When my right hand one failed, it was just that side that refused to latch -- the release drive stuck in the 'open' position. if you hit the hatch button do you hear the motors turning? I used a long stick to push the button while standing at the hatch to determine what was and wasn't trying to work. Pulling the interior panel common to the latches is quite simple -- just the black storage cover nut and kind of pull on the panel. With the cover out, you can give each latch a good rap and see if they are stuck.
