Just doing the install and was wondering on the cats with the V-Clamp flange if I should use copper RTV as there is no gasket. Also I noticed when I took of the stock manifolds that the bolts have locktite on them. Did you guys use locktite here? In the past I have used antiseize going into an aluminum head.
Try to use something to seal them. It is very hard to get a good seal. I hit mine on a speedbump the other day and i could see the fumes by the cats. I used antiseize on the bolts going into the head, I dont know if thats good or bad but i can get the bolts out if i have to and they stay tight. Hope the install goes smooth
The reason they don't come with gaskets is that the flanges are supposed to butt up tightly and seal. I suppose you could make a gasket but it will make it more difficult to tighten the clamps. I didn't use anything on mine and they seal well when I tighten them properly.
I used antiseize on the header bolts as well and haven't had any problems with them loosening. GM probably uses loctite so they stay tight for the life of the car - assuming you'll never have to take them off.
Jim,
I didn't use any sealant on the flange faces, myself. But I did dress down the cat flange faces with a flat file as they were a little rough with rust. So far I don't have any leaks. I plan to retighten the clamps after several heat/cool cycles. I used Loctite on the header bolts per the service manual.
