One of the dangers of this forum is overthinking things. This thread is so far deep into overthinking that we are now questioning the type of water to mix with dexcool to put in a car. Come on people. Just use distilled water. This is getting out of control.

The consensus on here seems to be to use distilled water. There really only seems to be one person posting here with an Internet myth that distilled water is inappropriate.

Most use distilled water. Some use "Demineralized water" that is purified to remove scale forming minerals by other means. No antifreeze manufacturer uses untreated water in their premixed antifreeze.

I'm not.

You don't seem to undertand at all what is in the jug of antfreeze, especially modern "extended life antifreeze/coolant."

First, I will agree that if you fill your cooling system with 100% pure distilled water and nothing else, you might have a corrosion problem.

However, that has nothing whatsoever to do with what happens when you mix distilled water with DexCool® (or any other mdern "extendeded life antifreeze/coolant"). The DexCool® or other antifreeze/coolant contains ethylene glycol to lower the freezing point and raise the boiling point. The antifreeze/coolant also contains corrosion inhibitors and other additives specifically to prevent corrosion damage. The difference between DexCool® and G05 and various other HOAT and OAT coolant formulations is the corrosion inhibitors and additives. They all use different chemistry and different technology to prevent corrosion damage, but they are all designed to work best when mixed with mineral free water.

Some corrosion inhibitting technologies actually promote scale formation if there are minerals suspended in the water that's mixed with the coolant. That's one of the big reasons for the development of modern "extended life" coolant formulations. The old silicated coolants were especially bad about promoting the accretion of mineral scale on the inside of radiators and heater cores. This is why distilled (or demineralized) water has always beeen recommended for use in cooling systems.
