I have no idea what they charge per hour...125.00-$150.00 per hour maybe...that’s why we try to stay away from the dealerships here on the Forum...better info...a lot of dealerships are CLUELESS unfortunately !!...you may be better off taking the car to an independent shop...if that shop has any questions post them here...we will answer them !!

Saying that dealers are “clueless” is a little aggressive. It’s an LS after all. Not really that complicated. Diagnosing these cars isn’t that difficult. As for price, most dealers will give 20% off on repairs if you ask. And they will install gm parts if you bring them in. Independent shops won’t touch outside parts generally speaking. They will want to charge the markup. Also, if there are any issues after the repair, dealers are far more likely to stand by their work and make things right than independent shops. I’ve been to many of both over 20 years of service. Do you pay a little more at dealers? Sure. Is it worth it? Absolutely. It’s hard just getting a call back from some of these independent shops. And that’s assuming they don’t go into BK.

OK, we will say that they are not “well informed” !!!...they are good at brake changes and stuff like that but when it comes down to diagnostics they fall a little short there...just read some posts here where members have taken their cars in for diagnostics...they fire the “parts canon” too !!...they don’t make money doing involved diagnostics !!...I’ve attended formal diagnostic seminars in my area over the years to increase my knowledge that had dealership techs in attendance and some of the questions they ask I sometimes just shake my head !!

Excessive wheel speed variance can be caused by multiple things. On a C5 with a lot of miles on it the first thing I would think about is the hub. A loose hub can cause this code. The wiring much less so. As for the dealership Vs an independent shop you are more likely to find somebody that knows what they are doing at a dealership Vs at an independent shop. They have the tools and the diagnostic training to figure out where the problem is. I have seen too many independent shops that had poorly trained mechanics.

OP: By the way, what year is your car? 97s had an issue like this that required replacement of the EBCMs due to a design fault in the EBCM. The replacement EBCM became available in the 2nd half of 1999 and was only for the 97s and early 98s that had the EBCM located near the rear diff. If the owners didn't complain while the car was under warranty the EBCM more than likely wasn't replaced. I doubt the updated replacement parts are available any more as most people didn't know about the issue unless they used ABS a lot.

Not my experience at all over 20 years and several repairs. Rather, I’ve had terrible experiences with independent shops. And costs are pretty darn similar if you do the research. I guess if you have a flood car with electrical issues, the dealer isn’t the place for you. Or if you want to wrench yourself that’s going to save yourself some money too. But overall, dealers do great work. Again, this is an LS motor. Pretty simple stuff to diagnose. I’ve bounced back and forth between dealers and independents several times for various repairs. Dealer always comes out cheaper, better customer service, and repairs that occur the first time, the latter two are important to me and make up for the marginally higher expense of dealers.

Everyone will have different experiences. I have a local independent mechanic that is great. There is no clueless service advisor. He doesn't charge me "shop fees" or "hazardous waste" fees, or I guess you could say they are built into his $85/hr labor fee. The lobby does not have fancy coffee and snacks, but I don't care. My last two visits to my local Chevy dealer were bad so I am staying away from there unless it's warranty work.

I agree. We each have our own experiences. But a blanket statement that dealers are clueless is aggressive. I can give multiple examples of different independent shops screwing things up (albeit at a lower shop rate) and failing to stand by their work. DM me If you need any info on any independents or dealers in Phx, Tempe, Scottsdale etc.
