I have a '99. I was getting a message to "Service Vehicle Soon" and "Service Active Handling". The codes told me that steering wheel position sensor was a problem. I found that the part has been discontinued and no longer available new. I was quoted around $500 to replace the sensor by two dealers but I would have to supply the sensor. The only ones available are used parts and they run around $400. I am reluctant to spend $900 to have a used sensor installed as I suspect its life will be short.
I have unplugged the sensor which deactivates active handling as I understand it is not safe to drive the car without doing this. This also deactivates traction control. I'm OK with not having active handling but I would like to have traction control.
Any suggestions other than biting the bullet and installing a used sensor?
Thanks

Plug it back in and have TC, and erase the AH warning when you start the car. Look for a low mileage used sensor (99-00) and get all the info on how to install and center the sensor if it has been moved -- Tech 2 really helps.

Thanks, I understood that by unplugging the sensor it deactivates AH and if that is not done the sensor will give false signals which could cause some unwanted corrections by AH. I actually experienced that.
My concern is my car is low mileage, only 55,000, and the sensor went out. So how long does the next one work? I would like to get rid of AH and move on. Now I'm reading that the EBCM is a common issue for a '99. Hummm, this is discouraging.
