Not sure what you put in there, but if the polarity is reversed they won't turn on but will not be damaged and can be installed properly and will work. If they don't have a built in resistor you will probably short them if you connect them with incorrect polarity to 12 volts. Shorted LED diodes may cause the unit to not power on.

You broke it. Whats your skill level and experience?
It's not necessarily broke, but it might be time to send it to a vendor that does this and pay the 60-100$.
I never installed the LEDs, I did regular bulbs. LEDs are polarity sensitive, so that is one possibility - they could be backwards. The other is what I previously mentioned about needing to use little resistors when installing LEDs. The third is that something went south.
