My brand new headers' flange is warped into a .070 concave dish towards the head mounting surface.
The manufacturer says this will be ok and will work fine if I use some orange RTV sealant on the .055 gasket.
Does any one have experience with this?
I would think it would be ok, in fact, it wouldn't surprise me if it was made that way intentionally.
Header bolts have always been famous for loosening up constantly. Anyone who's had them before on older engines know all about this. The bolts will easily pull the flange in .070" when tightening them, but with this slight tension on them (flattening the flange out), the header will act like a giant lockwasher of sorts and prevent them from loosening up as easy..
I could be way wrong too, but it sounds like a good theory. :D
One of my FLPs was warped more than that in the opposite direction. I just tightened the bolts down in steps and that pulled it up against the head with no problem. I did not use any RTV and they sealed up ok.
Chris,
Mine were warped also. But like others have said, they flatten out nicely when bolted down at final torque. I used no gasket compound and have no leaks. Enjoy!
