Default Question??

Can a bad idler pulley make the car less responsive when accelerating??
I took a yellow light and punched the throttle I heard a squeal and the motor running but the car took a sec to actually go I know my idler pulley is rusted and I need to replace it

You have two idler pulleys.. which once shows signs of rust? Most idler pullies are either plastic or aluminum.

Very doubtful that an idler pulley could put enough load on the engine to be noticeable

the idlers are cheap.. only one bolt and about 25 dollars each. easy to replace.. The AC belt idler and the accessory belt idler. having them bad wont effect acceleration.. Lots of things could effect acceleration. including a bad transmission.

You also might want to give the harmonic balancer a good look at. The balancer is a known problem on our C5s. It in itself would not affect performance though.

I know you probably don't want to hear this but it is starting to sound more like a transmission slippage issue.

the car was squealing so i change the belts and the car was still squealing the idler pulleys looked really old, i figured thats what may be causing the squealing, so when i lost power i thought it cold be from the old pulleys but it sounding like a transmission issue ill change the idlers soon and let you guys know if anything change and how the car felt afterwards....

What??? Auto to manual??? Don't do it, just buy a manual C5. I've seen this before and it's just money down the drain. Just say no and step away from the transmission.

there are also two tensioner pulleys … you need to do an isolation test to determine which belt system is squealing.. If the idlers look really bad ( your words ) then the tensioners are also bad. And of course the harmonic balancer. its going to cost 400 to replace 2 idlers and 2 tensioners, about 800 to replace the harmonic balancer including reputable labor. switching automatic to manual is hardly worth the effort , time or cost on a 20 year old car.. the value is just not there.. and with the lack of maintenance it has received, you better save that money for other problems.
