Default How hard to change oil pump?

Ever since i replaced my oil switch, my oil pressure has been running low... Now 6psi hot idle. Ive got a new switch on the way, but if its not the problem, how hard is it to put in a new oil pump in an, Ls6?

It's quite a lot of work. The balancer and front engine cover need to come off to get to the pump. You most likely have a faulty oil pressure sender, it's a common problem.

I would use a external mechanical gauge to see exactly what pressure you have ??? there are other factors which can cause low pressure like internal leaks, bad bearings etc. ????

For 9 months oil pressure was perfect...65 on cold start, then 35 hot idle, 55 cruising.

Then pow 130psi..sender failed. Amazon had one..off brand next day delivery so i grabbed it and put it in, immediately low pressure. 45 on cold start, settling in to 40...cruises at 28 hot, idle is between 6 and 12.

If the sensor was working and reading fine, then the sensor failed, then you replaced the sensor, now the sensor reads low, based on the fact that you tightened the sensor and dont have any leaks, I would guess its a faulty sensor. Especially if it is a "off brand". I had a faulty sensor and got one from Autozone. It was in stock. No problems.

usually the sensors max out or don't work at all when they fail, I agree with getting an accurate pressure reading and going from there... replacing the pump is not particularly hard but it is quite a bit of work, if you go that far and have wanted a cam now is the time lol

Thats my experience, either no reading or maxxed out.

No desire to cam the car, love the drivability, economy and reliability

I dont have a manual gauge but even then...if i did it would still likely mean two intake removals, so..i guess drop in an oem switch and if it goes back to normal..then i know. If it stays low... then my next step is the pump, maybe the bypass is stuck

Get the brass one from O’Reilly Auto Parts. The manufacture is BWD and the part number is S4202. Better than the AC Delco, which is aluminum.

I looked at that one but wasn't sure, being bwd vs delco and the one i took out that failed originally, was a bwd brass one.

Could be a fake Chinese counterfeit part that failed. I would install another sender first.

How many miles on the car when you removed the BWD sensor and replaced with the one from Amazon?

When you put the new sensor in also do the OPS relocation--several "How to's" in the Forum.

"BWD" stands for Borg Warner Division...... Given the amount of work is involved, when changing the oil pump, I'd try another sensor (or two), LONG before I'd think about swapping out the oil pump. I did swap my sensor, 2-3 years ago, "just because" of all the horror stories I'd been hearing, and even though I chose to remove the intake to do it, it was 100X times easier than going after the oil pump. I know this, because I swapped out my balancer, too, and had a bad case of "while I"m in there fever" when I did it. I also replaced my timing chain, upgrading to an LS2 part, which required removal of the front cover and oil pump, in order to get at it. Given what's involved in THAT, I'd only swap the oil pump as a last resort.

BTW, did you use a torque wrench, when you changed your sensor? I could be wrong, but I seem to recall hearing that if you over tighten it, during the install, it will affect it's accuracy.

A least 9000 miles based upon my info from the prior owner. I am the 9th owner.
