While this is absolutely correct you have to remember that not everyone likes a lumpy cam or a car that shakes at idle. Also speaking from experience getting the idle to work perfectly on a 1997 PCM can be a serious pain in the *** with a cam swap. That is speaking from experience. Like I said though, I agree and always run aftermarket cams. Just might not be for the OP.
The Z06 cam makes great power for a factory cam as long as it's not from an 01.
Id still seriously consider an aftermarket cam even if only a little bigger than the OE Z06. You will be glad you did later. The 228R with a good LSA and the heads and intake will put you around 4-415 to the tire if not a touch more depending on tune. Texas Speed has or had videos on their site with each of the cams giving you audio of them in real cars.
Your going to regret not getting a cam. Do the extra work you won't regret it. Plus if your not upgrading your exhaust your leaving a lot of horsepower on the table. The way i look at it ,your already into it why stop at the last turn. The tune is not cheap. And if you decide to cam it later you're going to have to retune. Many of us went through what your going through. I had a fix price when i started mine and low a behold my got dame house is remortgaged. JMO
PM Your doing everything right on getting much better flow but you're definitely not going to utilize what your doing your going to have a huge bottleneck. This is all JMO no offense here. Just speaking from my experience and all my friends went through the same thing.
