Default feedback needed for replacing base model stock shocks

My 97 base model still has it's original 23 year old shocks and they are tired. I drive this car all the time and I want to get feedback on what you guys are using. I hear so much about C6 Z06 shocks, but I have a friend that did it and for the crap roads around here and as much as I drive it they are way to firm for me. I've seen C6 Z51 shocks listed for sale and heard of people using 2004 C5 Z06 shocks (can't find any front ones of those so far) and even heard of using stock C6 base shocks. So for all you almost daily drivers what say you?

You are on the right path a to C6 base or Z51. Can't tell where you live.

I used the C6 Z06 shocks - they actually fit from later years. I can give you the part numbers I used. I have a 2004 base. It stiffened it up, and if I was on crappy roads, I think it would be too much. It definitely has a firmer, harder ride. If your roads are that bad, I would skip the C6 Z06 shocks. Just my experience.

I went with C6 Z51 shocks and sway bars direct from GM, haven't been disappointed in 5 years.

You probably want to stick with the OEM base shocks. The C6 Z51 and C5 Z06 shocks are much firmer and it doesn't sound like you want a firmer ride. I think the Z06 shocks may have been superseded by the Z51's and won't be readily available. The OEM shocks give a good ride, last a long time and provide good body control, so they're probably the best option for your location.
