I cant find a definitive answer. my car stopped registering MPH on both the cluster and the HUD. i started digging around and found a small toggle switch under the knee bolster. I tore apart half of the dashboard and removed the cluster to find that one of the previous owners had crudely tapped into the Vehicle speed sensor circuit and wired a switch in series with it. the wires came loose behind the cluster.
I removed the switch and soldered the wires back together the way the factory had it and now the speedometer(s) work again.
My question is: why would you want to switch off the speedometer and would this also disable the odometer when switched off? Btw my car is a 2003 coupe.
well the odometer only showed 10,156 when i bought it 3 weeks ago. i feel like even if that were so, that would be MANY miles to drive without knowing how fast you were going. ive been digging around the car and its definitely a low mileage car. the seats look great, there are NO scratches under the front fascia etc, etc. i guess ill never know, but i guess im not too worried either. oh, and it still shows an open recall for the infamous column lock malfunction.
On older cars many people would simply disconnect the mechanical cable at the transmission or under the dash. With newer cars of course you have an electrical sensor that sends a signal to the cars speedometer/odometer, to my knowledge most cars only use one source to determine speed and miles driven.
