I've been told to change my thermostat to a 160 degree and reprogram the computer for it. Others have said don't. Any thoughts, recommendations, please?
If, your not having a problem',leave it alone.
Before ,I would change, the thermostat, I
would clean my radiator. They tend to pick up
trash.
Good luck
I would lend to throwing the stock radiator away. It’s rather laughable for a sports car that sees any duty outside of street use. Rinky dink single core.
Do you have a brand or part for a replacement unit? I have to clean my a/c condenser a few times a year, it picks up all kinds of stuff, grass, dirt, leaves, He might try that if he's having temp issues.

Reason: info.
What are your temps? In traffic or on highway? Stock car or modified? So many questions need to be answered before anyone can help.
Chances are a 160 stat will not make a difference.
I've run the stock thermostat on the track for 10 years. If you are spending a lot of time at full throttle and have coolant temperatures too high, you need an aftermarket high capacity radiator. High coolant temperatures in daily driving with a stock radiator point to fan problems, blocked or partially blocked radiator, internally plugged radiator, blocked or partially blocked condenser or air in the head(s) and in some cases missing air dam(s) or aftermarket front bumpers and splitters.
Because the air for cooling comes from down low in front of the air dams, C5's have a tendency to pick up debris which ends up against the condenser or radiator.
Be sure to check the 1" wide space between the front side of the radiator and the rear of the condenser for debris. Plastic bags can sometimes make their way into that area.
Low coolant temperatures can result in lower efficiency and economy and in severe cases accumulation of sludge, an engine killer.
As others have said, you shouldn't be having any cooling issues with the stock system. First, clean the radiator/condenser and cavity area. Second, may be time for a flush and/or a new stock radiator.
As someone that has a 160 tstat installed, I recommend not doing it. It just causes the coolant to take longer to come up to operating temp. If I didn't have to remove the blower to replace mine now, I'd gladly swap it for a 180 or stock tstat in a heartbeat.
Also Google Radiator Genie. Makes cleaning Radiator and condenser easy. I bought mine off ebay. It comes with an air wand and a water wand. You won't believe the amount of crop that comes out of the Radiator and condenser. I don't have heat problems any more and my a/c blows colder.
I just pull the radiator out of the car and hit it with a pressure washer. You'll get WAY more crap out of it that way. Just hit it straight on and it won't bend any fins. Done this many times to my Camaro and at least once to every other thing that I own.

Hi,
The stock thermostat (192degree) is fine for a stock LS. LS engines like to run a little warmer then the old school small blocks.
If your cooling system is in good condition and there is no debris blocking air flow you can maintain cooler temps with one of our Coolits.
It allows you to run the right-side fan in high speed mode while in traffic or any time you want. It doesn't affect the normal computer operation of the fans.
The factory fan settings come on low speed at 226 degrees and high speed at 235 degrees, but they turn off at 35 mph which we have found
to be too slow to pull enough air from under the front end (bottom feeder). With the Coolit you can run the fan at any speed and whenever you want.

Hi a few years back I put on a wiring harness that kicks in the second fan without running the air conditioner
you take out one of the fusses under the hood and the harness comes with the same fuse integrated with it and in the instructions it tell you witch one to take out and you insert the one that is in the harness and where to ground it,
it comes with 2 clickers, this has worked for me especially during the Woodward dream cruise. hope this helps.
this device came from sac city. and it is called cool it.

I installed a screen from H D on bottom behind radiator to keep out trash
Hi all,
Clancy, I'm going to do this as well on my current rebuild I'm doing. What size mesh did you get on your screen to sufficiently catch debris, but allow for adequate airflow too??? Thanks
Mine tends to ride at 215 but when bogged down in traffic it will climb to 235, stock ls1 with long tube headers that are wrapped with heat shield. I just ordered the v2 coolit.
