I have read many posts on this site about this ugly topic but I have a few questions that I could not find answers to in my search.
Is there a recall on all vettes by Chevrolet? I have never had a problem with my column-a 98 coupe- in 4 years so I am a little afraid to let the local Chevrolet service dept "fix it" if you know what I mean. they have never said anything about a recall when it has been in for reg service and I am afraid to ask unless you guys think something should be done to mine. Lastly, what exactly is a column bybass and how is it installed?
thanks for your help

Re: Column Lock question for those in the know. (C5 Snowboarder)
There is a GM fix available from your dealer and you car (a '98) should be included. If you have a automatic trans this is a good way to go because the GM fix will completely eliminate the column lock. If you have a 6-speed I think you are better off with the aftermarket baypass. The GM fix for 6-speed equiped cars does not eliminate the column lock it simply includes a more durable actuator and little rewiring. It is an improvement but does not completely eliminate the risk. My 2001 came with the more durable actuator but not the wiring change and I had problems with it. If you go with the GM fix the aftermarket bypass will no longer work. So, if you choose to go with GM be sure that is what you want before hand because there is no turning back.
The bypass is available from Corvettes of Houston for $100. It is a little black box that plugs in inplace of the column lock actuator. Installation requires removing the pannel under the steering column, unplugging the actuator, plugging in the bypass, and replacing the pannel. Instructions are included. I installed mine in under an hour.

I have the COH bypass and it works without issues. After installing it, though, I read that a new lock motor costs about the same amount. The old motor is unplugged and the new one plugged in and mounted in a void area under the dash. The theory here is by using a GM part you don't have to worry about electronic glitches some have had with the bypass. The bad bypass units were recalled/replaced by COH (no charge) but it scared a few folks. Do something before it is too late!!

I have a 98 six-speed. My column-lock failed when I was out of town, and I had the CLB from COH at home. Needless to say, I had a new column-lock and harness installed at a dealership, and when I got the car home, I installed the CLB. No problems so far.

If I remember right, the column lock recall was by VIN number. My 99 FRC was included so I had the dealer do the fix. It involved the addition of a relay (MN6). Your 98 is probably covered. If you have an auto, the recall fix completely eliminates the column lock as I understand. As previously stated, there is also an aftermarket bypass available. I would do something about it if I were you. Either get the aftermarket bypass, or have a dealer do the recall fix. I have not had a problem with mine as yet, Knock on wood.
