Default Air Bag Removal

Going to remove my steering wheel air bag to remove the sticky and paint it. Question: I have seen a few directions for removing this and they say to disconnect battery, and two yellow connectors under steering column and remove panel to get to them. Do they really need to be disconnected or can you just remove the yellow connector on the back of the air bag once removed by the two screws on the back of the wheel?

I would definitely disconnect the battery for 30 mins before you get to work. Then you can just remove the airbag and disconnect the yellow connector into it. Even if you don't disconnect the battery there is realistically no reason for the air bag to go off, but if I handed you a hand grenade and said it probably wouldn't go off at random would you grab it from my hand?

I just did this to replace the steering wheel. There is a fuse on the passenger side floorboard that should be removed as well. Better to be safe than sorry... Otherwise easy job.

I had the sticky airbag and left it in place while using goo gone to remove all the sticky. Underneath was a nice black finish and I just wiped it with interior detailer, looks great.

The sticky is gone! Removing the airbag was much easier than I had imagined. Removed it, stripped it with lemon ammonia (which worked great), sprayed with LV paint, and put it back together. The only thing I am disappointed in the color match with the #153 paint. Not a real good match, but still looks good. Thanks for all the help from the people who responded to this thread!

I know this is an old post but for a close color match, I used "Corvette America (CA)" which is now under "Top Flight Automotive" for my 50th Anniversary Vette. They recommended "Dark Shale #431994A" which is actually a dye. I did my Travel Buddy drink holder and the color is very, very close, only the discerning eye would notice any difference. Starting my airbag cover tomorrow. For those who don't know, on the C5, the two screws on the back of the steering wheel which hold the airbag cover on, it's a "Torx 30". Hope this helps.

Replaced my horn "bladder bag" this month to pass inspection. Apparently a work horn is a thing lol Anyways...disconnect battery for atleast 30 mins (overnight if you scared) and get the wrenching. The Bit you will need is a T50 I believe. As others have suggested...them hoes in in there TIGHT if it aint never been removed. I clocked the wheel 12 and 6 o'clock to get to them. I used a T50 bit with a wobble extenion and got them out without to much fuss. Remeber...to uhook the horn contact ring wire you PUSH IN AND TWIST and pull out. After that...you have the entire unit. Set aside in a NON STATIC environment. Handle that bitch like its a bomb because....well it is
