I recently bought a 02 coupe and I want to lower it. It has a nice set of 19/20" Cray wheels and the fender gap is like a 4wd... Anyway I jacked up the front. took off the wheel and then jacked up the leaf spring. The bolt is completely seized. So much so that now the head is rounded off... I soaked it with WD40 and still nothing. I know I can buy new bolts but what would be the recommended method of getting the existing bolts out?
The bolt threads into an insert that's "bonded" to the spring. Over time, the bolt can seize within that insert, and in all seriousness, you're pretty much screwed, no pun intended. It sounds like someone already attacked that bolt, without success. Problem is, if you go all "Rambo" on the bolt, you can break the insert loose from the spring, and it's "game over" for the spring.
DISCLAIMER.....I'm not responsible for any damage, if you try this, as I think it would be a "last resort"......if you could heat the bolt enough to melt candle wax, but not wreck the spring, wax has been known to penetrate the threads, and act as a lubricant, allowing the bolt to rotate......maybe.
if you have to get a new front spring get coil overs… problem solved and the car can be more tailored to your driving. just put a set of Silvers on my car.... with a 4 corner balance and a good street alignment....night and day difference. if that is not in the budget you need a new front spring mine will be available soon. my car is a Z06 so the spring rate is more heavy than a standard vette.
